Joint Statement by Organisations of the Chinese Community in Western Australia for Supporting China’s Safeguard of Its Territorial Sovereignty of the South China Sea
The formation of "The South China Sea Arbitration Tribunal" is in violation of theUnited Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The tribunal is supposed to makedecisions on 12 July on the request for "arbitration of the South China Sea"unilaterally instituted by the Aquino government of the Philippines. The ChineseGovernment, in accordance with the international law and the sovereignty of theSouth China Sea, has repeatedly reiterated its position and principle that "the ArbitralTribunal" is illegal and the "arbitration" is but a political farce and that China will notparticipate in and will not accept the "arbitration”.
China‘s peace and stability contributes to the peace and stability throughout the world,and a prosperous and stable China is in the interests of people around the world. Atpresent, China has become Australia's largest trading partner, the AustralianGovernment and the Chinese government have established a comprehensive strategicpartnership and the two countries have signed a free trade agreement. Australia’seconomic development and people’s livelihood is closely related to China’s prosperityand the Asia-Pacific region peace and stability. Australia will benefit from China’sstability and prosperity. The one hundred and fifty thousand overseas Chinese inWestern Australia love peace, respect for justice, and feel that they are obliged tojointly safeguard the safety and dignity of China.
To build the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation andsafeguard China’s security and dignity, we hereby solemnly and jointly state that we:
1. strongly support the Chinese government's principled stand of not participating innor accepting the so-called "South China Sea Arbitration Tribunal" and its illegaldecision and resolutely safeguarding China's territorial sovereignty in the South ChinaSea and maritime rights and interests;
2. strongly condemn the Government of the Philippines for its long illegal occupationof the South China Sea islands and reefs, and urge the new government of thePhilippines to peacefully settle sovereignty disputes over the South China Sea islandsand reefs with the Chinese government through bilateral negotiations in accordancewith "Declaration on Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea" and the relevantinternational laws;
3. resolutely opposes the show of force and military provocations by the United Statesin the South China Sea to threaten China's sovereignty and core interests, jeopardizepeace and stability in the South China Sea;
4. appeal to the Australian government to support the just position and tireless effortsof the Chinese people and overseas Chinese in Australia over China’s territorial in theSouth China Sea and to play a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability inthe South China Sea and the Asia Pacific region.
