Field Archaeologist
Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management (GJCRM) is an independent consultancy based in Perth, Western Australia. We provide quality service and professional advice in the fields of cultural resource management, Aboriginal heritage and archaeological research and legislative compliance issues to private and public sector clients. We have been providing consulting services for almost 20 years and have an enviable reputation within the industry.
Owing to continued growth GJCRM is seeking written expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced Field Archaeologists to join our dynamic, vibrant and established archaeology team.
GJCRM specialises in:
Heritage Services
Aboriginal heritage surveys and desktop research;
recording archaeological and ethnographic sites;
advice on cultural resource management policies, procedures and legislative compliance issues;
site salvage and excavation services;
cartographic and ArcInfo GIS services;
Native Title and historical research;
Large scale heritage and archaeological research projects
preparation of comprehensive cultural heritage management plans;
preparation of Section 18 applications;
compliance audits;
advice on Australian heritage and environmental legislation.
List of Services to be provided
There are two positions available; a senior field archaeologist and a junior field archaeologist respectively.
The Field Archaeologist positions will be responsible for providing archaeological services predominantly in Western Australia, and will be based out of the Perth office with regular field trips to remote locations.
The type of services to be provided will include but not be restricted to:
Research and Survey Tasks
• archaeological survey expertise and advice;
• coordinate and manage survey field trips in remote locations for periods up to 14 days;
• use of field equipment – field PDA, GPS, radios, field cameras etc
• site recording and significance assessments;
• consultation with Aboriginal, and other relevant, stakeholders;
• archival and general research and Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage site register searches;
• archaeological research;
• technical editing of reports, including formatting;
• high level report writing;
• negotiating and working with Aboriginal organisations and GJCRM clients;
• keep updated on legislative issues – WA Aboriginal Heritage Act (1972) et al.; and
• associated training eg. Occupational Health and Safety, 4WD certification & Senior First Aid Certificate.
Administrative Tasks
• written and verbal correspondence;
• liaising with government departments, organisations and industry;
• attending staff meetings;
• recording hours in the time billing system;
• answering phones;
• filing and managing documents;
• writing & editing heritage survey and assessment reports; and
• organising surveys and field trip logistics.
About You:
In order to be successful in the senior field archaeologist role you will require:
tertiary qualification with honours in archaeology
minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the heritage industry with a proven record of successfully running heritage surveys in the field
valid Australian work rights
valid C class Australian driver’s licence
current 1st Aid certificate
current 4WD certification
proven ability to work under minimum supervision and to organise workload and resources effectively
strong analytical skills
excellent written and verbal communication skills;
high level inter-personal skills and the ability to work well in a team
a sound understanding of ESRI, ArcGIS and the Microsoft Office suite of applications is highly desirable.
In order to be successful in the junior field archaeologist role you will require:
tertiary qualification with honours in archaeology
minimum of 1 years’ experience working in the heritage industry, or demonstrated field experience in other contexts
valid Australian work rights
valid C class Australian driver’s licence
current 1st Aid certificate
strong work ethic and initiative
analytical skills
excellent written and verbal communication skills;
high level inter-personal skills and the ability to work well in a team
Some understanding of ESRI, ArcGIS and the Microsoft Office suite of applications is also desirable.

Preference for both positions will be given to applicants who currently reside in Perth or who would be willing to relocate.
