SENIOR ECOLOGIST - F/T fixed term contract (6 months) with the likelihood of extension.
We are seeking applications for a Senior Ecologist to join our ecology team based in Balcatta, WA. The role will involve providing expert technical advice to clients, directors and staff, assisting in delivering high-quality field surveys, monitoring programs and scientific reports to our clients.
Important requirements of the role will be the ability to lead field surveys, analyse and interpret ecological data and prepare accurate, clear and concise reports in a timely and cost-efficient manner. The role will include field work in urban, regional and remote locations within Western Australia.
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
tertiary education in botany, zoology, biology or equivalent
excellent team participation skills and attributes, including reliability, flexibility, cooperation, transparency, commitment and respect
positive attitude
relevant botany skills and experience:
minimum five years of proven environmental consulting or industry experience
demonstrated experience leading flora and vegetation surveys (Reconnaissance and Detailed (level 1 and 2) surveys)
demonstrated familiarity with Western Australian flora, including field identification and specimen identification skills at the WA Herbarium
vegetation statistical analysis to determine vegetation associations
complete vegetation mapping (GIS skills)
Threatened (DRF) and Priority flora searches
knowledge of rehabilitation process
a high level of general proficiency in computer software and applications including Microsoft office products, Access databases
relevant zoology skills and experience:
proven environmental consulting or industry experience
demonstrated experience with fauna survey methods
knowledge of the terrestrial vertebrates of WA: avifauna, herpetofauna, mammals
terrestrial and subterranean invertebrate survey experience
excellent written and communication skills:
demonstrated competent report writing ability and experience
fauna, flora and vegetation research and desktop reviews
scoping and preparation of quotes and proposals
effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills
experience/knowledge of key areas:
Pilbara
Midwest
Goldfields
South-west botanical province.
ability to travel to and undertake field work in remote areas, potentially for extended periods of time (2 weeks per month), including an ability to demonstrate fitness-for-work and pass drug and alcohol screenings as required
sound knowledge of environmental legislation and processes in relation to flora, vegetation and fauna
willingness to develop and embrace new methods, technologies
Current Western Australian ‘manual’ driver’s licence
Desirable skills include:
published reports/journal articles
ability to work with and create spatial datasets (ArcGIS) and produce maps
experience in GDE investigations
experience in remote sensing analysis
staff supervision, training and mentoring
client and stakeholder consultation
budget and time management
ability to provide solutions for clients
knowledge of the industry network and ability to identify and secure projects
current first aid and 4WD driving certification, as issued by a recognised trainer.
