Senior Scientific Officer - Physiology

The School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences offers a range of courses, including the only accredited pharmacy course in Western Australia, an AIMS-accredited program in laboratory medicine, and courses in molecular genetics and biotechnology, human biology preclinical, and oral health therapy. Teaching laboratories have a wide range of real-world replications, including a model pharmacy and robotic dispensary. Researchers are advancing knowledge in diverse areas ranging from cryobanking for recalcitrant-seeded Australian rainforest plants, a new treatment for diabetes and an innovative drug combination for pancreatic cancer.
Your new role
A challenging and diverse role delivering excellence in laboratory support within the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. As the Senior Scientific Officer (SSO) for Physiology, you will provide valuable support for the effective functioning and development of the Physiology laboratories within the school.
This exciting opportunity will allow you to apply your technical, organisational and creative skills in a diverse and extremely practical area. Your valuable theoretical knowledge will add value to experiment design and continuous improvement practices.
Your role will include
Line management of the Scientific Officer (Physiology) and management of the Physiology labs and classes (including Human Evolution and Neuroscience).
Liaise with suppliers and manage the purchasing of consumables and equipment.
Work directly with students in Physiology practical classes as well as liaise with academic staff on class development, innovative techniques and improved resources.
There will also be a requirement for accompanying students and other staff on field trips up to twice a year.

What you will bring to the role
Completion of a relevant degree with considerable relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
Highly developed organisational skills with the ability to manage and coordinate the technical and laboratory resources of a physiology lab.
A high level of physiology discipline specific knowledge and considerable experience in contemporary methods, techniques and protocols, including proven expertise and aptitude in use of digital physiological data recording techniques and equipment.
Experience in use of animals (in particular Cane Toads) in a laboratory setting.
Experience in the use of volunteer human subjects for demonstration of physiological principles using exercise and other physical activities.
Proven knowledge of laboratory safety and experience in the maintenance of quality manuals to comply with OH&S policies including chemical manifests for the purpose of accreditation and risk management.
Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgement in the resolution of issues as they arise.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of people with cross-cultural sensitivity and present information and provide instruction to others in and educational setting.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills with proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team as well as the ability to manage and supervise the work of others.
