Sample essay:
Frequent international communications excite the passion for learning foreign languages, incenting the heated debate whether young people or adults can learn foreign languages more easily.
Some people think children and teenagers are at the golden age of learning foreign languages, so they can learn more easily. Firstly, children and teenagers are prone to concentrate on learning. They do not have to make a living or raise families; they only task is to study, so more time can be spared on foreign languages. Secondly, children and teenagers are better at imitation, which is proved to be a good way of learning a foreign language by educational specialists and professors through many years of research. Such knowledge as pronunciation and intonation can only be learned by imitation. Lastly, children and teenagers never hesitate to try. When grammar or pronunciation mistakes happen, they never have the idea of fear of losing face. In such cases, many adults would be shy from going on, while the younger students will keep on trying. As far as the mistakes can be found out and be corrected constantly, foreign languages will be mastered better.
Adults have their merits in learning foreign languages. First, they have better ability to understand. Grammar is easier for them. And they can learn an article faster than children and teenagers. Second, adults have better circumstances to learn foreign languages. They have more opportunitites to practice. As soon as they learn from books, they can use what they have just learned in the real life. Finally, adults are more perseverant. Learning language is quite boring. It may start from interest, but it will only succeed with precious persistence.
In my opinion, children and teenagers are suitable to learn foreign languages. Just like learning their mother tongue, the younger they start to learn foreign languages, the sounder the base would be. Another theory argues that languages are to be acquired but not learned. And the best time for language acquisition is childhood. |
