<p>Australia\'s largest department store, Myer, will open its first
overseas store in Dubai late next year, with plans to open another
four across the United Arab Emirates and eventually break into the
growing Eastern European market.</p>
<p>Myer\'s chief executive, Bernie Brookes, said Dubai was the
obvious choice for the first international store because the city
was recognised as the shopping hub of the region and was one of the
most "densely shopped cities" in the world.</p>
<p>He said it was a turning point for the company and would
establish Myer as "an international-class department store".</p>
<p>"Three of the 10 largest shopping malls in the world are in
Dubai, and retail is expected to surge by 12 per cent through until
2011 in the UAE, but at an even faster rate in Dubai," Mr Brookes
said.</p>
<p>"Importantly, this will be the first of a number of stores over
the next few years as property is sourced and completed. We are
looking at further store expansion within Dubai and beyond into the
broader Gulf region, the Middle East and Eastern Europe."</p>
<p>Myer will open in the new Ibn Battuta Mall in partnership with
Nakheel Retail, an arm of the Dubai World group of companies, which
has developed properties including the man-made Palm and World
island developments.</p>
<p>Nakheel Retail recently bought the New York department store
Barneys, with plans to use the brand as an anchor-tenant in its new
malls, and several British department stores, including Debenhams
and Harvey Nichols, have opened in Dubai\'s malls.</p>
<p>Mr Brookes said Myer Dubai would resemble a city store like Myer
Bondi and would stock a full range of designers and lines.</p>
<p>"We have been focusing on getting our home market right, which
we have done, and we will be opening another 15 stores, so we will
outgrow Australia," Mr Brookes said.</p>
<p>"We will be a small but significant player [in the UAE]. Myer is
one of the most iconic brands in Australia and we are proud to be
taking it … to the rest of the world."</p>
<p>Mr Brookes said full details, the complete roll-out plan and the
company\'s international strategy would be released at its full year
results in September.</p>
<p>The Melbourne fashion designer Rosemary Masic, whose label
Nevenka is a strong seller for Myer, said the overseas expansion
was a dream come true for Australian designers who would be on show
to buyers from around the world. "I just think, bring it on. The
opportunity this brings is just enormous," Ms Masic said.</p>
<p>Myer\'s director of apparel, Judy Coomber, said the biggest
challenge in the expansion would be managing product range. "Given
the different climates between Australia and the UAE, we will need
to provide a product range to cater for the northern hemisphere. We
will be setting up a separate buying team to manage the entire
business," Ms Coomber said.</p>
<p>"We will be discussing this exciting opportunity with all of our
current Australian designers and suppliers with a view to launching
their products in our stores in the UAE. This will give many of
them a chance to expand and grow in one of the fastest growing
markets and biggest retail economies in the world."</p>
<p>Sidney Myer, a Russian immigrant, opened the first Myer store in
Bendigo in 1900 and built up his empire of department stores,
initially known as Myer Emporium, across Victoria and later South
Australia.</p>
<p>In 1983 the company bought the Sydney-based chain Grace Bros,
which started as a landmark department store building in Broadway
in 1886. The stores were rebranded as Myer in 2004.</p>
