THE case against the man accused of the murder of international student Jiao Dan hinges on the results of a new DNA report, a court has been told.
Prosecutor Maria Mattocks today told the Supreme Court a new date could not be set for the trial against Daniel Adam Wright until an addendum to the original forensics analysis was completed by pathologists at PathWest.
Mr Wright, 36, was due to stand trial this month for the wilful murder of the 22-year-old from China as she walked home from Stirling train station in October last year.
But the trial was postponed last month after claims a WA policeman contaminated exhibits.
An investigation is now underway to determine if other exhibits might also have been contaminated.
Ms Mattocks today told Justice Lindy Jenkins in a status conference hearing that an addendum to the DNA report would be finalised by the end of this month.
``The addendum may affect whether of not the matter will proceed to trial,’’ she said.
Miss Jiao's semi-naked body was discovered on October 8 last year on the front lawn of a house in Oswald St, Innaloo, just metres from her home.
Police allege she was strangled and sexually assaulted in a violent attack, in which her attacker used a beer bottle to inflict injuries on her.
The case was adjorned until October 9 and Mr Wright, who has pleaded not guilty, was remanded in custody at Casuarina prison.
